The distinctive skyline of Riverfront Park in downtown Spokane |
The downtown segment of the Spokane River Centennial Trail begins near milepost 17 of the trail. There is a restroom and parking area just east of the Upriver Dam and the intersection of Frederick Avenue and Upriver Drive. The trail is sandwiched between Upriver Drive and the Spokane River across from the parking/restroom area. See the access map for additional access points.
A half mile west of the parking area, the route joins Upriver Drive for a mile or so. After crossing Greene Street near milepost 18, the trail returns to a separate paved path running right along the river. There are several places to stop and cool off in the shade of the willow trees lining the river bank before heading into downtown Spokane.
A bit more than a half mile past milepost 20, turn right onto Mission Street and then left at Perry, which will take you to Mission Park where there are restrooms, water, and picnic tables.

From here the trail becomes its own paved path once again, taking you over Hamilton Street, past Gonzaga University, over the Don Kardong Bridge, past the Miracle Mile Medallions (milepost 22), and into Riverfront Park in the heart of Spokane.
Downtown lodging options include Doubletree Hotel, Travel Lodge, and Quality Inn. Since bicycles are not allowed on Division Street (Highway 395) in the city limits, use Howard Street at the west end of Riverside Park to access downtown locations.
After spending some time exploring Riverfront Park, use the Howard Street Bridge to cross the Spokane River. There are excellent views of Spokane Falls from the bridge.
After crossing the river, continue north on Howard Street for a couple of blocks and then turn left onto Maxwell, following the city bike route. Stay with Maxwell, following the signs to Pettet Drive, which will take you over the river and into Riverside State Park, where the west segment of the trail begins.
