Central Segment of the Centennial Trail

[Trail]
Jogging is popular along Upriver Drive

The central segment of the Spokane River Centennial Trail begins at the north end of the Denny Ashlock Bridge. There is an access point with parking and a restroom just off Upriver Drive about 1.5 miles east of the intersection of Argonne Road and Upriver Drive. See the access map for additional access points.

The trail is mostly level through this segment, and begins with a stretch through open fields, wildflowers and pine woodlands. Much of the route moves right along the banks of the river, offering many opportunities to stop, cool down, and even take a dip in the water on hot summer days.

Near milepost 14, the trail leaves the river and joins Maringo Avenue. Follow Maringo Avenue to Farr Road, turn right and continue through a quiet residential area. A few blocks later, follow the Centennial Trail sign onto Upriver Drive, which has a nice, smooth, 4-foot shoulder for trail users. Be prepared for an increase in traffic at this point.

In less than half a mile after turning onto Upriver Drive, you'll reach the intersection with Argonne Road. A mile south of here (left) are motels, restaurants, stores, and other services at the junction with Interstate 90.

In another mile the route descends to the river once again. At Boulder Beach, a popular swimming and recreation area, the trail route leaves Upriver Drive and continues along the willow-lined banks of the river. Here again, there are several opportunities to stop along the river.

A restroom is located at milepost 17, on the north side of Upriver Drive. Just beyond this point is Upriver Dam. A few hundred feet downstream is the dam's powerhouse.

At milepost 18, the trail rejoins Upriver Drive and continues for another mile to the intersection with Greene Street. Just beyond this intersection, the trail separates once again from the roadway and moves right along the river bank.

Visit the Downtown Segment page for details on the next six miles of the trail.
