    TRAIL ADVOCACY -

The Friends of the Centennial Trail is YOUR public voice for issues involving the Trail such as improved access, safety and maintenance. We work with user groups and local and state authorities to ensure that your Trail experience is as good as it can be!

         TRAIL IMPROVEMENT -
The Friends of the Centennial Trail has a long history of helping in the creation of significant improvements along the Trail through fundraising campaigns, lobbying efforts, and collaborative agreements with governmental agencies and property owners along the Trail. Examples include:
          - Procurement of funds for completion of the West Link bridge across the Spokane River
          - Addition of restrooms, drinking fountains, picnic tables and benches along the Trail and at trailheads
          - White water park Trail access
          - Improved signage along the Trail

    TRAIL DEVELOPMENT -

Although much has been accomplished, our work is far from over. Projects in the study, planning, construction or development stage at this time include:

             - The Hamblen Connector and completion of the route from Downtown to Riverside State Park-
One goal of the Friends and its constituent groups has always been to "complete the trial", i.e. fill in the gap between the Downtown corridor and Riverside State Park sections of Trail. In recent years this goal has come closer to reality with the construction of the Sandifur Memorial Bridge and the proposed trail -inclusive  Kendall Yards development along the north river bank. The Friends of the Centennial Trail is actively involved in this process, meeting with neighborhood groups, city agencies and project supporters such as Avista Corporation. The Friends are also exploring options for moving existing portions of the Trail west of Downtown off Government Way where feasible.

      - Realignment of the Centennial Trail by the Mission Street Bridge.

At the present time, trail users are presented with a busy and potentially hazardous street crossing at the Mission/Perry intersection.  Potential solutions to this problem include a tunnel under  Mission Street or realignment of the trail route under the Mission Street bridge once the current bridge is replaced. A bridge over Mission Street, similar to the current Don Kardong Bridge near the Gonzaga Campus, is a third possibility.

     - Maringo/Argonne Trail Realignment.

As a non-motorized recreational trail and transportation corridor,  the Centennial Trail is routed away from existing roadways wherever possible. However, where alternatives are not available,  Trail and road share the right of way. One such area is Upriver Drive along the Spokane River as it approaches Argonne Road.
For many years, this did not present a problem. However, due to traffic increases, line of sight issues and changes at the intersection to allow enhanced traffic flow,  the area is now confusing and potentially hazardous for cyclists, pedestrians and runners. The Friends of The Centennial Trail are actively working toward a solution. One proposal under consideration includes re-routing the Trail off Upriver Drive through the Maringo neighborhood to the new Argonne Bridge. The Trail would then continue under the bridge to Maringo Drive on the east. Special provisions for this routing were made when the bridge was recently rebuilt.

    - Trail Extension to Long Lake

The Friends of the Centennial Trail continue to assist Washington State Parks and Avista Corporation in development of a Trail extension from Sontag Park to Long Lake, also known as Lake Spokane.
