Trail Building Projects
The goal of the Friends of the Centennial Trail is to complete the gaps in the Centennial Trail. The major project we are concentrating on at this time is to complete the section at Mission Street.
The Mission Street Gap: Crossing Mission Avenue and continuing upstream on Upriver Drive has been recognized as a safety challenge requiring special design attention. Mission Avenue is a major east/west arterial in Spokane. It is a four-lane roadway in the vicinity of the Mission Avenue Bridge over the Spokane River. The bridge itself is a unique earth-filled concrete arch design, which includes a hump that limits visibility, thereby creating a significant hazard for vehicles and non-motorized traffic. Various retrofits are under consideration to reduce these hazards on the east end of the bridge. The bridge is not currently scheduled for major renovation or replacement.
To alleviate these challenges, the Friends of the Centennial Trail contracted with Alta Planning to design a comprehensive plan. The most feasible ways to complete this particular gap may be to build an underpass across Mission Avenue and connections to the south, improve non-motorized crossings and connections at Perry Avenue and Mission, and improve connections under the railroad that divides Mission Park.
Below are fly through renditions of these ideas.
